Hoerner Wing Tip Construction

Moving on, we will now attach the Hoerner Wing Tip to your wing.

The fiberglass tips are only available for the CII plane right now. If you order a CI kit it will come with standard factory bow tips, fabric covered, for either clip wing or long wing.

Place your Hoerner wing tip over the outboard end of the wing, covering both the front and rear Spar tubes as well as the 3/4" aluminum sheeting overhang you attached on the Outboard Wing Construction portion of your wing construction.

Once you have done this, align the Hoerner wing tip for straightness and tape the wing tip in place to hold it while you mark and drill for the rivets.

You may wish to place a clamp on the rear spar tube for extra hold.

Place a line down the edge of the fiberglass wing tip at about 1/2" in from the edge.

DO NOT exceed the 3/4" aluminum overhang beneath the edge of the wing tip.
CAUTION: DO NOT use S/S rivets as the extra pressure may crack the fiberglass.

Drilling & Setting The Cleco's

NOTE: Our builder has staggered the rivet holes and has spaced the rivets at 2-1/2" apart. The staggering of the rivet holes will give you a stronger hold of the wing tip and will reduce the possibility of cracking the fiberglass under stress.

At the rear inboard end of the Hoerner tip, a closeout bracket is inserted into this empty space with the bracket flanges facing in. This gives a nice flat surface and results in a more finished look as well as facilitating better aerodynamic flow in this area. Also note that the rivets are not staggered on this piece because the closeout flanges are not very wide. Not to worry, there is very little movement or stress in this joint.

As we look down the riveted wing tip, again, you can see the staggered rivets.

After you have completed placement of all the rivets, you are DONE! Go ahead and repeat this same process for the other wing tip placement.

Here are a couple links on PRO's & CON's of alternate wing tips which you may find usefull.
