01-06-06 Spat, Spat, Spat, Engine Problems @ 500 Feet. - by: Doc. Green - Early in the afternoon, Capt'n Ted and I adjusted the valves and torqued the heads on my Jab ... routine maintenance. Nothing unusual; no problems; a routine operation. Then we set out to fly a bit. I was climbing out and had reached perhaps 500 feet agl, off to one side of the runway, when suddenly I got the dangedest sound through my headset. It sounded like an ol'timey hit or miss engine, sort of spat, spat, spat, but real loud. Can be found on "Site Pages Menu", "Hanger Talk" web page, under "Forced Landings". Can also be found by clicking "HERE".

01-06-06 Basic Flying Instruments - by: Ralph Shultz - Have you ever wondered what you would do if you were ever to fly into bad weather or lost your horizon reference? How could you control your plane without that visible horizon? As you already know the safest thing would be to never let this happen. But what if you do? Can be found on "Site Pages Menu", "Piloting & Navigation" web page, under "Piloting". Can also be found by clicking "HERE".

01-06-06 Fabricating An Engine Stand - by: Art Freeman - Have constructed the engine stand on wheels to allow wheeling the engine up to the engine firewall and below the rear end of the root tube for installation. The completed stand clears the side longerons by about 1/2" on each side with the underside of the stand top clearing the horizontal engine firewall by about 1 inch. Made of 3/4" construction grade plywood, 2"x4"'s, screws, two fixed wheels and two swivel wheels. Can be found on "BUILD PROJECT Menu", "Articles" web page, under "Other Challenger Build Articles". Can also be found by clicking "HERE".

02-08-06 The Risks Of Flying Low - by: Ed Burkhead - Risk management is fancy terminology for not getting crunched. As we fly, we need to try to keep layers of options available so, if normal operations go sour, we fall back to plan B, then plan C if necessary. Having extra options can sometimes make the difference between safety and weeks or months in the hospital. Can be found on "Site Pages Menu", "Piloting & Navigation" web page, under "Short Piloting Tips". Can also be found by clicking "HERE".

03-14-06 Pilots, Certificates and Ratings - by: Ralph Shultz - With the arrival of Sport Pilot, the day has come where the “fat ultralights” of the past have come of age and now require FAA pilot certificates to legally fly them and soon will operate under the watchful eye of the FAA. Many flyers see this change as the passing of an era and a negative thing. Many view it as a positive step forward as these pilots will now be joining the ranks of general aviation. Can be found on "Site Pages Menu", "Piloting & Navigation" web page, under "Short Piloting Tips". Can also be found by clicking "HERE".

03-14-06 Pre-Fit Tail Section - Due to the possibility that one of the pieces of the tail section may have been manufactured incorrectly, it is best to pre-fit the tail feathers onto the fuselage tail before covering. The only items needing to be pre-fit are the vertical and horizontal stabilizers. Can be found on "BUILD PROJECT Menu", "FEATURED BUILD PROJECT". Can also be found by clicking "HERE".

03-14-06 Two Ways To Make A Refueling Station - by: Art Freeman & Larry Davis - Have you ever wanted an electric refueling station that will pump your fuel into your fuel tank without spillage or leakage? Can be found on "BUILD PROJECT Menu", "Articles" web page, under "Helpful Articles & Tips". Can also be found by clicking "HERE".

03-14-06 Wing Stands For Painting - by: Art Freeman - In deciding what to do concerning how I would paint the wings, I came up with a rather simple design for a stand which would support the wings in a horizontal, flat manner and could be rotated to bring either the top or bottom of the wing to face upward. In my build, I will be adding wing tip strobe lights, which allowed for drilling a 5/8" hole in the fiberglass wing tip edge for the wiring and 1/2" steel tube in the wing tip stand to pass through and support the wing. Can be found on "BUILD PROJECT Menu", "Articles" web page, under "Other Challenger Build Articles". Can also be found by clicking "HERE".

09-01-06 Pre-Fitting Your Wings - Problems with the kit "may" occur, which is the primary reason each Challenger builder should do a pre-fit of the wings prior to covering. Can be found on "BUILD PROJECT Menu", "FEATURED BUILD PROJECT". Can also be found by clicking "HERE".
